Přednáška If it were not for the Tito-Stalin Split… Samuil Bernštejn’s unrealized version of the Macedonian Literary Language

V pondělí 5. listopadu 2018 se ve Slovanském ústavu AV ČR uskutečnila přednáška If it were not for the Tito-Stalin Split… Samuil Bernštejn’s unrealized version of the Macedonian Literary Language (a story told by an unpublished manuscript), kterou proslovil prof. Motoki Nomachi z Univerzity Hokkaido.

Anotace:
The literary Macedonian language was codified and implemented in 1945 as the official language of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia. The first scholarly grammar of literary Macedonian ever to be published is the “Grammar of the Macedonian Literary Language” written by Horace Lunt (1952, Skopje). However, the distinguished Soviet specialist in South Slavic Samuil Borisovič Bernštejn also authored a literary Macedonian grammar. It could have been the first scholarly grammar of literary Macedonian, but the grammar remained unpublished in the then-current political climate due to the so-called Tito-Stalin Split, which had taken place in 1948. My paper is based on Bernštejn’s unpublished manuscript, which I recently discovered in Moscow. I will describe the history and fate of this manuscript and critically discuss Bernštejn’s views on the Macedonian literary language and the version of literary Macedonian that he proposed and promoted.
